There was a swirl of activity around our plant
and offices recently. Folks at home-base were getting ready to
host our team of distributors and they were preparing a number
of case studies for discussion. I was impressed. Sure, I knew
that Xenon products were on the cutting edges in
a number of industrial applications, but when I saw more than
a dozen of them written up and prepared for the distributor meeting,
even I was surprised at the scope.
I was reflecting how the technology of pulsed light seems to be
everywhere today ... curing wood coatings, helping improve the
yields in credit card manufacturing, ensuring GREEN-ness in a
unique display technology, sanitizing the packaging of sensitive
medical products ... well, I could go on. And you’ll read
about a few fascinating examples right in this newsletter: vitamin
enhancement of mushrooms and prolonging the shelf life of pies.
We live in interesting times here at Xenon Corporation. I hope
you do too.

Louis Panico, CEO.

| Lou Panico,
our President and CEO, rivals NBC’s Matt Lauer for piling
up Frequent Flyer miles. Where in the world was Lou Panico in April?
Quick answer: Japan, Taiwan and China. Long answer: meeting with
key customers to gain first-hand knowledge of emerging applications
and just how Xenon’s unique pulsed light technology can play
a role. In May Lou attended the Media-Tech Show in Frankfurt, Germany,
where Xenon introduced the high energy pulsed light RC-900 series
– more about that below. Lou was there to meet visitors to
the Xenon booth and answer questions about how this equipment solves
the problems facing Blu-ray top coat curing.
In June, Lou was in San Diego, CA, attending the IEEE Solar Conference.
This leading-edge conference provided the insights Xenon needed
to confirm its role in providing high performance flashlamps for
testing photovoltaic (PV) cells and modules used in Solar Panels.
The Solar market is really on a fast-climb, and Xenon is a major
supplier of solar flashlamps.
Where was Lou in July? In San Francisco, CA at the InterSolar North
show and conference. This exhibition, which is part of Semicon West,
gave Lou the opportunity to talk with customers who stopped by the
Xenon booth for insights on how pulsed light lamps are used in solar
simulators, achieving the most demanding international test standards.
Where will Lou Panico be in August? On a family vacation. And where
in the world is that? Ah, that’s a closely held secret.

Vitamin D is the reason your mother told
you to drink your milk. Building strong bones was mom’s reason,
but recent research indicates that Vitamin D can also reduce certain
common cancers, improve cardiovascular health
and help avoid Type I diabetes. So Vitamin D is the new wonder-vitamin,
and the search is on for non-animal foods that can supply it. There’s
only one winner in the search however—the humble mushroom. Mushrooms
have relatively high levels of ergosterol which can convert to ergocalciferol—Vitamin
D2—when exposed to UV light.
Eager to achieve this enhanced vitamin value, an international food
producer of high volume mushroom crops introduced pulsed light into
its in-line manufacturing process. By safely exposing mushrooms in
less than 10 seconds with pulsed light, they are able to significantly
increase the Vitamin D content of the portobello mushrooms to 100%
of the RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance). All this without compromising
freshness.

They came from Taiwan and Israel. They came from Australia, Singapore
and India. They flew into Logan International and traveled up to
Wilmington, Massac husetts
for Xenon’s distributor meeting.
The international team of Xenon distributors was able to take advantage
of on-site Xenon experts gathered in one spot to give all the answers
to all their questions. They experienced hands-on training on new
equipment, one-on-one conversations with Kent Kipling (Vice President,
Operations), Joe Peirce (District Sales Manager) and of course,
CEO Lou Panico.
But when an international team comes to Boston, certain traditions
must be observed. So there were lobster dinners, an evening show,
and a boat ride around Boston Harbor. |

It’s all in the bottom line. “How many
good discs do you have at the end of the day?” Lou Panico likes
to ask. “That number is the proof of your productivity.”
Want that number to be higher? It can be significantly increased with
Xenon’s RC-900 Series curing systems—the new generation
Blu-ray curing systems that deliver increased power driven by a new
6 kilowatt power supply. The result is faster curing through a faster
pulse rate. This results in greater productivity and higher throughput.”
Other benefits include the elimination of nitrogen often used
for oxygen inhibition, elimination of the need for shutters due
to instant ON/OFF, and PLC interfacing to the controller so the
user can set high energy pulse bursts over the range of 1 to 15
pulses-per-second for precise curing energy.
Bottom line ... fewer bad discs at the end of the day. Follow
this link for more details on buffing up your Blu-ray disc production. |

Until recently, high-intensity pulsed light—which
is acknowledged to have the superior edge in heat sensitive curing
applications— was limited to static situations. In other words
the target had to be held in a fixed position directly in front of
the lamp. But in a paper delivered at RadTech, Kent Kipling (Vice
President, Operations) revealed that recent advances in lamp geometries,
pulse rates and lamp wattages are making it possible to have the benefits
of low heat, excellent depth penetration and energy efficiency in
continuous motion applications.
To read Kent Kipling’s complete paper and get all the details
of these benefits as they apply to wood coating, follow this link

We are proud to announce that we have a chieved
ISO 9001:2000 certification. Working closely with National Quality
Assurance, USA (NQA), our people responded to all requirements of
their audit. Achieving this milestone is part of Xenon’s overall
goal to deliver products and services which meet customer expectations. |
